More elderly people 'may have to set up home offices'
A growing number of older people may have to move belongings into self storage to make space for a home office, as more individuals are likely to have to work into their retirement.
This is according to Friends Life, which predicted many pensioners will be running businesses from the ground floor of their own homes by 2020 in order to supplement their income.
Head of corporate benefits marketing at the organisation Martin Palmer said: "It won't be uncommon for front rooms to be dominated by desks with computers and phones or for business meetings to take place in people's dining rooms and conservatories."
A survey by the group found 34 per cent of workers would consider running a small, one-person business from their property when they are older.
Other methods Friends Life suggested elderly individuals could turn to in order to secure their retirement income may include renting out rooms to lodgers, which could also require shifting personal items into storage.
Last month, housing minister Grant Shapps called on local councils to do more to encourage older people to move to homes that are more suited to their needs.
