How to pack your garage for a move

For most people, having a garage is both a blessing and a curse. While the extra storage space is lovely, they also tend to become a breeding ground for clutter. If the thought of packing up your overcrowded garage for your big house move is giving you nightmares, we’ve got your back.

From scattered tools and old sporting equipment to pricey camping gear and mismatched seasonal decorations, we’ve put together a simple guide on how to pack your garage for a stress-free move.

Step one: Declutter!

Garages are home to many necessities but also broken toys, rusted tools and a host of other items you don’t need to cart to your new home. Going through every box, sort every item into piles earmarked for storage, donation and the bin. It will take time, but it’ll be well worth it in the end.

Step two: Safety precautions are important

Resist the urge to toss everything into a box and call it a day. Garages are full of sharp objects, so make sure to wear protective gloves when sorting through items. The last thing you need is to be injured while grabbing the wrong end of something sharp hidden amongst the clutter.

Grab a pair of super-grip gloves from our onsite box shop!

Step three: Group and label

As you begin to pack scattered items, remember to group them into categories and create a detailed inventory guide to make the unpacking process a breeze. This way, you won’t have to open every box just to find one specific item.

Pro tip: Place regularly-used tools into a small essentials box and keep it aside for any quick repairs needed on moving day

Step four: A quick clean

To avoid lugging dusty and cobweb-ridden items to your shiny new home, give everything a quick wipe-down before wrapping and boxing them. Dust can become sticky over time, so keep a small bucket with warm soapy water and a cloth with you throughout the packing process.

Step five: Use the correct packaging materials

From boxes and bubble wrap to moving blankets, box tape and a handy tape dispenser, it’s important to ensure you have high-quality packing materials to speed up the packing process, prevent potential damages and protect your items during transit or in storage.
